Legislative ACTION ALERT--HF 2478  Regulates Abortion Facilities.

Iowa Right to Life Committee
Legislative Alert
Release: Immediate

DES MOINES--March 4, 2008--This bill redefines outpatient surgical facilities or ambulatory surgical centers to include any facility which performs more than 5 abortions a year and receives Medicaid or Medicare. The purpose of a bill of this nature is to protect women.

Abortion facilities operate unregulated by the state.  Most people believe that since they are protected under the law they would naturally be regulated. Not true. However, if this bill were to pass, it would require them to be licensed and pass federal inspections for safety of the patient in case of an emergency during surgery.

A common sense bill.

We do not know if it can make it out of committee by the deadline this Friday, but it never hurts to try.

Action:  Please contact the Human Resources Committee in the House.

Ask the Representatives to support HF 2478  and bring it up for a vote in committee. Tell them the bill will ensure that women getting surgical abortions have appropriate safety measures in place. We believe Abortion facilities should be regulated.
