Release: Immediate

Rejects Federal Funds -- $320,000

DES MOINES--March 3, 2008--Iowa's Governor, who owes his election to an abortion group, Planned Parenthood, has rejected funding for a program that teaches family values to wait until marriage before sex.

While the Governor rejects $320,000 that would go to Iowa Educators to teach abstinence, the Governor has placed in his budget appropriations $1,000,000.00to go to Planned Parenthood's family planning, they call "Healthy Families.  Last year alone, they received Five Million Dollars in Medicaid and also funding out of Title X (family planning), Title IV, Title XX, TANF and Social Security.

Abstinence Only has been under attack since the Democrats took power, thanks to the Governor and Representative Mary Mascher who have denied any attempt to eliminate Abstinence Only while pushing through  Planned Parenthood's sex ed bill and now state funding.

This year, Representative Mascher sponsored a legislative briefing on the ineffectiveness of Abstinence Only programs.  Following the briefing, the Governor announced that he would reject needed federal funding for Abstinence Only Education.

The Legislative briefing did NOT include any studies on faith based curriculums nor results for Abstinence Only exclusively.  Instead, the results were of Abstinence Education along with Abstinence Only.  By lumping the two different types of curriculum together, the results are faulty because the programs are diversely different.

One contains an Abstinence title, but has no components of an abstinence program, while the other was named Abstinence Only in order to identify a true abstinence program. The results of the study stated that Abstinence Only was ineffective.

Families should be warned of a deliberate attempt by Planned Parenthood to eliminate abstinence until marriage education on the grounds that it is discrimination against the homosexual life style. They want children to experiment in all forms of sex prior to marriage. See their Teenwire.
